Is Mega Man X worth playing if I was lukewarm to Mega Man 2 and didn't really care for 3 (the only other MM game I played)?

X2 is strictly better in every way and doesnt have meme cutscenes and cheesy dialog midlevel to slow things down

X2: Faster X1, arguably better
X3: Similar quality to X2, but with a terrible focus on ramming bosses. Playing as zero is fun though, and it has a nice amount of varying paths.
X4: Terrible dub, okay game
X5: Awful game unless you're willing to do Xtreme Buster Only Unarmored X, then it becomes incredibly good aside from a certain boss that was probably halfassed in half an hour
X6: 60% awful, barely thought out parts, 20% decent(I'd argue they're actually pretty good) parts, 20% absolutely infuriating. You'll rue embed related
X7: 3D done utterly wrong, terrible dub, terrible, slow gameplay, X breaks the game and it's just not fun
X8: Better X7. Axl is likable now, you can play all three characters from the start of the game, levels are more gimmicky than ever, unfortunately there are TWO ride chaser stages, Jacob is easily one of the best OSTs in the series and the vile fights are pretty fucking neat.

It's worth a shot. They're similar, but fundamentally different. Mega Man has offerings in completely other genres, though. Legends is great.

X2 is more of X1. The best thing it does is have you start with the dash so you don't always have to go to a certain stage first

X3 is mediocre for multiple reasons:

X4 is the best of the PS1 games. Armor upgrades got fucked in X5 and X6 because you need all four pieces to use armors that are worse than the ones X starts with. Even if you use Zero you're still bombarded with text boxes.

X has more emphasis on movement and exploration if you're into that.

I actually really enjoy Command Mission and I'm glad to own it for cheap, but holy shit, does it seem way too easy so far. I think it's after the POW area, which is only the second, it gets more challenging and the boss himself before at the end of it will fuck you up with strong early game party hitting attacks.

My brother once also rented it and he completely ran into a wall at the area after that factory where you meet Axl. I think some golems or something that might have been normal encounters completely tore through everyone's health and it was almost time to take it back anyways.

I actually did beat X7. It's a shit game, but I did enjoy the Red and Sigma fights, so at least it wasn't completely painful to play. And the voice acting is hilariously bad.

I think X8 is fantastic and played it a bunch of times. All of the other series are easy to recommend as well. I played Zero 1 again some time ago, and it's not nearly as good as Zero 2, but play the whole thing if you want more of the same. Play ZX and ZXA as well. Play all the other series. MMBN and Legends are fantastic. Play the classics as well, but maybe start with MM2, because the first game is probably not for everyone, like X6.

If you hate yourself, play X6 with armorless X, buster only, and pick Blaze Heatnix's stage first. Then come back and tell me about how great it was.

The thing I don't like about Megaman X is that since you can choose your stage, you could end up without the dash boots, so the game had to built around the assumption that the player wouldn't have them. Okay, a lot of it's justified, but the concept isn't bad. If it was faster, didn't make you unlock X, and included an over-the-shoulder button for precision shots and a guidance laser like the Tails/Eggman levels from Sonic Adventure 2 to target shots, it could have been a lot better. Neo Sigma was actually a damn fun and intense boss. I didn't expect that kind of fight or music, but I'm glad it's part of the endgame.

I don't remember a hell of a lot about X6's development but given it tried a lot of very good ideas (and had the flat-out best soundtrack of the entire PS1 trilogy) I think it was probably something rushed out both as a cashgrab and an attempt to get something out as fast as fucking possible while Inafune was off circlejerking on the beginning of the MMZ series. I remember something or other about how Zero being shown alive in X6 was a contribution towards putting the kibosh on the real X being the dictator of Neo Arcadia in Z1 (the rest of it being it was kinda stupid).

Layer and Palette haven't been so much as mentioned since X8 outside of character-cards in some crossover games and the like. I can see how X3's charge upgrade could be hated for slowing down shots in return for a wide spreading "Fuck you" blast that even gets past Sigma's bullshit in the very last boss, but they experimented and I could appreciate that. Looks neat at least and can wipe out entire sides of the screen.

And I personally think the opposite, X2 is much less worse with not being as helpful and more necessary than you'd think. You're not naturally going to guess where to use a certain weapon without it when the floor looks the same in a certain stage while being able to see the entire area rather than just showing tiny to big secrets kills the discovery aspect entirely. It doesn't just become "Neat, now to find out how I get there", it leaves no imagination as to just how far that little
vague sensor goes and why.

Sometimes X2's I.Tracer highlights blocks you've already destroyed and other times it highlights a spot of nothing in the middle of a room where you have to stand and charge up Silk Shot to get a bunch of health sucked into you. Since it works like a weapon you can't shoot anything while you're using it, so you have to dance around a bunch of enemies chasing a target reticle that only moves sideways to point out a clearly visible side passage you saw on your first run through the stage. I don't like using it.

I think the Falcon Armor is a great choice because of its look and capabilities, though the April Fools 2014 iteration of X seems to give him built-in flight capabilities so the Falcon Armor is no longer needed. Maybe it's only hovering though, or air dashing. X7 makes the air dash a permanent part of X's arsenal, which was one of its few good decisions. One of its other good decisions was the Glide Armor, which both looks cool and does exactly what its name suggests. Other than that I'd have to go with the X8 armor sets that allow you to swap out parts of different armors, but unfortunately it doesn't let you use two parts in the same slot. If you could combine the two Buster parts, the result would have been X being able to always fire diagonally, since the Icarus Buster part raises the level of every shot and every level of charge on the Hermes Buster gives a diagonal shot. Stuff like that is what I wish we could see. Cosmetically I like his X1 armor the best, and if Ultimate Armor is allowed, I would have loved to see the Command Mission version of it in a mainline game.

I have the autistic capacity to tolerate a lot of shit in games that other people might find annoying. For that in particular I just blew away everything before scanning then chasing after it wherever it went until I found everything I hadn't already with some thinking.

The only real flaw I see is that it's treated as a weapon for no reason and not just something you activate from the armor by pressing some other button like Select when someone could just spam scans and shots while rushing through.

But finding that exact area in a certain Maverick's stage definitely isn't something you'd find without just shooting Wheel Gator's weapon away from enemies randomly at the start. There's just absolutely no way of finding it otherwise without already knowing about it.

Also, the standard jumping attack of the sword is surprisingly strong, I do a lot of hopping and slashing in that series.

Beauty of the game is you can play any way you choose. Hell, can play it buster-only and pretend it's Mega Man X: Zero. Not being able to charge your weapons right off the bat is weird, but you get access to a mid-charge shot the very second you get the Z-Saber.

You can get pretty fucking cuhrayzee with the Z-Saber if you're good though, and the game more or less demands you no-damage speedrun a stage to get an S rank.

Honestly I'd kill for the X series to be remade with the same level of thought and care the zero series had. The gameplay is so good but the levels and bosses very rarely take advantage of that.

There's literally one, ONE good boss in X5.
Volt Kraken(I forgot his localized name, Squid Adler I think?). Except you can't really see how good he is unless you're playing under very specific conditions(i.e unarmored, no upgrades, buster only, XTREME mode) because otherwise he's just as shit as every other boss in the game.
Seriously, he's a god tier boss fight under those conditions. Fast and difficult, you die in two or three hits and you have a lot of shit to dodge while needing to walljump high to hit him, while his projectiles go from normal straight projectiles to wall hazards to seeking orbs.
Everyone else is fucking trash. The subweapons were trash(to the point that in X vs Zero if you're Zero X uses his X4 instead of his X5 subweapon set against you). Dynamo's fights were trash. X vs Zero was trash. The bear was trash, Dolph Mcwhalen is trash(and the sub mini-boss before him is a much better boss and is actually really good under the beforementioned conditions). The fly dude a shit, sigma in all his forms a shit, the previous game throwback bosses a shit(especially black devil), the pegasus dude a shit, the t-rex guy was alright, and I don't know who else I forgotten besides Dark Necrobat.

X4: The level design kinda takes a hit in some levels, but the full inclusion of Zero makes this game a fuckin' blast. And its got the best soundtrack.
X5: Like the X2 of the PS1 games. Not as groundbreaking, but still pretty fun. The "limited time" element is nothing to worry about if you actually know what you're doing. Though fair warning, the level design can get dickheaded at points.
X6: The story REALLY starts to drop off, but the gameplay is still solid enough. Something to try if you REALLY want more after X4 and 5
X7: Avoid this shit. This is one of the few cases where all the memey horror stories are true because this shit is horrible.
X8: Not great, but definitely better than 7. You could do worse.

The Xtreme games are only worth it you REALLY need the portable X experience, they've got the same problems as console games ported to handheld.

I really wish I could see Zero's new body in X artwork or something. I can't find stuff like it anywhere on the internet. It definitely takes getting used to, but the sprites look great and it does fit the new aesthetics of the future much better.

And what the hell's the story behind it? Zero made his body streamlined to move at nearly light speeds with the Z-Saber and through terrain while X did the same to be quicker with his X-Buster? I really wish they could have just used his original body for no reason to question with that artwork floating around that perfectly fits into Zero's art direction.

This is an interesting topic. Zero's form changes are mostly just palette swaps. He doesn't have the massive collection of armors that X does, but he still has his original post-rebuild refit and Absolute Zero. Should Zero get more armors or just stay like he is? He originally had a more powerful Buster than X before they decided to make him into a melee fighter, so getting rid of his Buster entirely is somewhat questionable. Maybe it just degraded after he went to sleep for 100 years.

That's covered in X5. But why he doesn't just get another one is a mystery.

My mistake, X6 also has the Z-Buster, because X6 is retarded. And then it disappears forever without explanation, probably because X6 wasn't meant to happen.

It's interesting to note that the way X and Zero get powers is different, too. X directly steals powers from bosses, whereas Zero gets entirely new powers which are based on whatever powers he has at that moment, using the boss as a template for the change. X is integrative, and Zero is adaptive. Or you could think of it as X being plagiarism while Zero is inspiration, which is funny when you consider who made whom. X might be more useful overall, but for all the talk of X being the pinnacle of robotic evolution, Zero actually does more evolution per adaption, since he makes new things, not just collects them.

It feels awkward how fans are always the ones to point this lore related stuff out while the creators almost always overlook it for their own beloved creations.

I see no reason his copy body wouldn't have one, myself, though the official stance is he's still using that rifle he picked up from a dead Resistance member as a pistol. But X eventually does get a stronger Buster than Zero has. Dr. Light's first Buster upgrade for him puts him on par with Zero, and successive ones would make him more powerful at range because Zero has less of an upgrade pool.

I guess we'll see what happens on the balancing front with Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite. X now has hand-to-hand combat, and he used the Z-Saber in X6, but overall he's still generally a ranged character.

There have been some cool-looking cancelled armors for both X and Zero. Maybe if MvC:I does well, we'll get new X games and some of those cancelled armors can make an appearance.

A theory I remember seeing is that X's armors have been scrapped down for parts to repair him and that's why he retains features like dashing or X8's third charged shot across games, legs were damaged so his dash boots from X1 were converted to repairs and their feature internalized.

Vile's also quite insane (mechanical-failure Maverick) and has a superiority/modernity complex, plus most of his power is Ride Armor. He's just asshurt an "inferior" robot bested him.

Sadly the X5 Improvement Project's main goal is quality-of-life improvements (main things cited were allowing you to skip or ignore Alia messages + skip cutscenes), text-based fixes or changes (ie removing the Guns n' Roses references from the localization), and graphical tweaks. Fullscale reconstructions aren't happening, or at least not with that project. For the example given of X7 it would probably just be something along the lines of X being unlocked by default.

Vile's pretty forgettable but he was the first rival character presented for X, plus the aforementioned being a giant Boba Fett reference. Maverick Hunter X did a lot for him by giving him (delusional) motives for being jealous of or trying to prove superiority over X, as well as giving him his own "copy" system through developing internalized weaponry based off of each Maverick's systems or having analogues for X's armor pieces.

Also, really cool thing they did with him somehow returning as some crazy destruction happy almost supernatural force of nature yet also scientific engineering without his master apparently calling the shots.

No, Omega still uses all his sprites and even still reuses his AI from Zero 3, so when playing as him through Model OX you still use a pistol as a buster. All they actually did for him was give his Rekkoha the ability to heal him and removed his delay from between attack attempts, so he moves and attacks a hell of a lot more. It's a good start but it's still noticeable that it's a stripped-down version of Zero's X5/X2 AI (and the X5 AI is a stripped-down X2 AI in the first place), but at the very least he has a shred of difficulty and unpredictability due to the delay removal.

Omega as something of a Force is fitting with Zero's reputation as a God of Destruction (I think I remember something about X being a counterpart God of Creation as well which would frankly fit seeing as X is the "father" of all Reploids by virtue of descendent design). If I remember right the deal with Omega in ZX is he pretty much clawed his way out of Cyberspace after his death, or was the result of a corrupted memory file. His background in Area N would suggest either/or since it flickers to and from the backdrop of Zero 3's Omega fight, and the black hole-like phenomena in the background when Z3's backdrop isn't shown.

I think it's pretty understandable. He has approximately 2 appearances in X, one in which he owns the fuck out of X only for him to be saved by Zero, and the other in which he outright kills Zero before laying the assrape on you (if you're bad and don't use homing missile.)

Killing a person demonstrably superior to X, (in the players mind), instantly ups a villains threat level and memorability. Doesn't matter if you simply kill him and move on at that point. Impressions are already set in. Especially if you were playing these games as a child, like most were.

What if the Ride Armors had customization, like the chips in X5-X7 or the neutral armor in X8? What would you put on your Ride Armor? I'd probably go with a closed cockpit, for one. Then maybe flight and a huge laser.

They sorta-kinda tried that with giving you options between armors in X3, but all that really amounted to was that there was one underwater ride-armor and the others depended on whether you liked being able to punch or being able to hover, or which one you needed to get a heart/armor piece at the time.

Nightmare effects are a fantastic idea on-paper but their actual execution is generally lackluster. Notable exceptions are Rainy Turtloid's stage adding a new section as part of the Nightmare (an armor piece is located here to boot), and Blizzard Wolfang reprising that goofy Zero Virus chase-down idea from X5 with poltergeists of the other playable character trying to collide into X or Zero.

Continually rewatching Metal Shark Player and the commentary on it by the guy that ripped apart Blaze Heatnix's stage for now and forever is comfy as fuck when relaxing, but also a shame to see that despite how shallow it was it actually leaked genuine potential that bubbled to the surface a little by pure accident during it's rushed development.

That's my own point of contention with X6 is that it is raw, unfettered and completely unrealized potential that to me illustrates that the PS1 X games were good to alright in spite of Inafune rather than because of him. For an eight-month development time the results really aren't too shabby, and its soundtrack is flat out the best of all the PS1 games. If it had been allowed the same dev-cycle as the other X games, I think it would've completely blown the other two out of the water, maybe even hit X1/X2 quality.

I always thought it had been around 3 or 5 months at most by repackaging X5 and cramming a bunch of environmental effects and new sprites in. 8 months is still pretty fucking bad for deadline.

How bad is Inafune really for directing games? I always thought he was at least the brains behind X and Zero's quality as well as the latter's own creation and now I found out after Mediocre 4.5 that he was basically just an ideas guy just like Sakurai blindsidingly always was for Kirby and basically none of the games' quality came directly from either of them.

I would recommend stopping at X4. 1-4 are all very solid games, but 5 felt like such an extreme clusterfuck. I pissed through duff mcwhalen and grizzly slash but then got absolutely blasted by tech kraken. The menus are an extreme clusterfuck too, and a nightmare to navigate. Gameplay isn't too shabby in most cases.

X6 is X5 but worse, lots and lots of bullshit. if you ever play it, do yourself a favor and don't get the shadow armor. It will fuck you much later on.

X7 I have not played, but I can only assume the years of notoriety are for a reason.

Bad enough that Mega Man games were good in spite of his decisions and calls rather than because of them. He also seems to have a penchant for climactic endings to a series with a disappointing boss, via X5 and Z3. Both games feature the most mindblowingly simplistic AI for a "climactic" boss I've ever seen, and ZX had to post-release correct the mistake of Omega by giving him absolutely no delay between attacks. Behind the X series it was his intention that Zero eventually steal the show once an opportunity for the character to be revived popped up (as shown by the increasing focus on Zero in X3 and on culminating in X5), and behind the Zero series it was a written-as-it-went mess with fantastic gameplay since Inti Creates does a bang-up job with handling other peoples' properties. Also Zero 4 was a damned perfect "ending" game even if I felt that was where the series really hit its stride in terms of gameplay.

If I remember correctly the darkness even moves constantly, and it triggers in the part of Turtloid's stage where you have to do dash jumps while flying seeking enemies are spawning and there are death pits between the dash jumps.

X1 and x2 are great, X3 is the worst of the three, X4 is better than X3 and X5 is more or less just a rehash of X4 with a "time limit" and RNG bullshit, though it's a good stopping point. X6 was rushed hard and it shows, X7 is easily the worst of the series and X8 is okay, but it ends on a cliff hanger that will never get resolved.

Overall the x series is worse than classic mega man. Though MM 1-6 can get pretty rehashy, they do improve even if only incrementally. X is just a rollercoaster of quality until it ends with a whimper.

7 and 8 don't seem worth bothering with. It just seems like they're using stronger tech for a weaker game that doesn't need it and overall nothing looks appealing.

A Final Strike as a technique was referred to in one of the audio-dramas or other supplementary materials for Mega Man Zero as what X and Zero did to take down Omega the first time, but otherwise nothing actually refers to Command Mission at any point. For all of that MMZ doesn't acknowledge Axl as having existed either (since he wasn't even conceived when Z1 rolled around), and he still wouldn't be acknowledged until ZX Advent with Model A, where functionally he was a shittier Model X with a homing shot and a copy feature, along with implications that some reploids and even modified humans (including Master Albert) still had a true A-Trans transformation function. Like most everything related to X and Zero, even Axl seems to have "lost" technology of his own, especially with X8 showing Albert levels of fluidity in the transformation functions.

I was personally thinking Axl and the Next Generation Reploids along with whatever more sinister, but scientifically feasible phenomena like Nightmares were the X series continuing in a new direction that devs reluctantly went with for all the room the Maverick Wars still have for milking.

I'd have adored for them to keep rolling with roughly the same problems (Reploids go berserk or otherwise lose control of their faculties) but with different ways of going about it. Sigma's been dealt with "for good" about as many times as Zero's been resurrected and Nightmares were absolutely diabolical in rewriting the entire body of their host Reploids along with unnatural phenomena in the world around them. Then there's Cyberspace as a literal digital world (X4 shoves you into a training program for Maverick Hunters) and as MMZ's use of it as a Reploid afterlife along where all computer data goes after "death", elements of the Zero series such as Weil or the Four Guardians who were alive when X was, all sorts of directions they could've taken.

Again, maybe we just need to overwhelmingly show support for the X series through romhacks if necessary. Eventually the interest and by extension potential market has to be noticed. There's nothing stopping them from easily making a buck off the continuing battles of the now beloved and legendary in vidya X and Zero if all the shit today gradually makes people more resentful towards plot.

X3 has a cool thing where if Zero dies in a specific area, X can get his saber, makes Sigma so much easier.

You know how sometimes X gets an upgrade in the middle of the game and he just starts the game with that upgrade as part of his default self in later games? Stuff like the dash.

Look how plain default X is to what becomes standard Zero. He's a template to put armors on, to upgrade. This is for gameplay reasons, but remember, Light died before X was even ready to walk around.

My personal theory is that CM X is Light's original intended finished design for X. Note the colors. It's the Ultimate Armor that was canonically obtained in X5. Darker blue, red crystals, golden trim, white and black detail work. Zero went through a similar upgrade when he got his golden trim and square shoulderpads. The versions of them we initially meet in X1 are explicitly both incomplete according to their creators' desires. Zero's upgrade is plot-twisted in earlier, with Serges (Wily), while X's doesn't come (for gameplay reasons) until what was supposed to be the finale of the finale; the final "castle run" of X5.

I feel proud of myself for not using the Z-Saber or even the Golden chip upgrade to get through everything because I didn't figure that out on my own.

My general play style for any game is to always prioritize speed or general mobility to get the most out of how it controls and reacts and always gives me a good challenge. So someone like me managed to find the leg chip and naturally chose that for the versatility in strategy that double air dashing afforded instead of anything else. And in my first time experiencing the game I wouldn't have known either existed and found and chosen the leg upgrade for sure while searching for everything in the 8 stages, so I treated it as such.

Megaman games are great for that. I once beat Battle Network 2, but my brother is the one that started the save data and played through the first 10 minutes or so, so I never got the tutorial or stumbled upon the fact Program Advances existed.

Breaking auras was a great time, I tell you what.

Finding or beating shit on your own after no matter what amount of time spent figuring out how to is the only way to properly feel a sense of accomplishment as a gamer and a person in general because it was your own mind and honed skill that allowed you to succeed at it.

How are X3 and X5 remotely as bad as X7?

We need new gameplay mechanics. There was supposed to be a 2-player co-op mode for X7, but it got cut during development. We could have had some cool team moves.

My thought for a new mechanic isn't that much of a leap of reasoning, but it seems like it has potential. I think permanent flight capability should be a thing in Mega Man. Maybe put some kind of a limit on it like the Falcon Armor or Jet Mega Man from MM6, where you can only fly for a limited time before having to recharge, have a Maverick Hunter gunship nearby beaming power to X and Zero so they can fly for longer, or give them a new Ride Armor model capable of sustained flight. Something like the Ho-229 from NieR Automata, but capable of fighting on the ground as well.

I really don't see any reason to try and evolve the core gameplay. It's fast and intense action that requires fast reflexes that gives a perfect sense of X and Zero charging through battlefields swarming with enemy forces strategically taking cover before emerging to blast away and tear through closing in waves of soldiers and ultimately facing off with similarly strong and unpredictable commanders on their home turf where they'll have the most advantage.

We got wall climbing and dashing already. I think it's about due for another upgrade.

Like 0b9df1 mentions creation of art assets for those particular games would be difficult. All of them are quite polished in their looks and maintaining a consistent theme, whereas SMW is pretty easy to crap something out for in MSPaint or a sprite-creation program of your choice, bordering on NES levels of asset-creation difficulty.

Zero 3 actually does have a shit-ton of ROM hacks from Japanese fans collected on the internet, but almost all of them are simple sprite-swaps for Zero, and a number of them incomplete to boot. The most prominent one I recall is a "play as Omega" hack which was a combination of a hacked ROM and a butt-ton of Gameshark codes to enable things such as actually being able to use Rekkoha/Rekuhouha like Omega does in the final boss, or rapidly switching between element-chips depending on which saber technique you're using, so you don't have to pause, select, unpause just to use your rising-saber at its max potential, similarly to Z4 or previous X series games.

X8 is personally my favorite but you have to aim for 100% completion on hard mode to fully appreciate it.

At least part of it is zeitgeist. For starters, I think Classic has a lot more going for it in terms of recognition, at this stage. Back in the early-mid 00s, MMX and MMZ were the shit, and there were loads of fan games/movies that used them, such as on Newgrounds, but we've since reverted. X isn't as well-known/relevant anymore, and I think Classic is more stylistically timeless, even if the gameplay of X is superior, which means that Classic is the one that will continue to stick in people's minds without any help. It also has more instantly recognizable songs, which is actually a big deal in that regard.

Additionally, I think it's at least partially the result of the blow-up of "retro" and "nerd" culture. There's this bizarre phenomenon where I see the 8-bit sprites of Mega Man Classic pop up in "nerd bars" like people suddenly started giving a shit about it, when Classic wasn't on anyone's radar for over two decades. The most well-received Mega Man fan content in the last decade has been rock operas about Classic, despite Classic's dormancy.

I wouldn't know about what it takes to romhack the X games, but in terms of making one from the ground up, it'd be a fair bit more difficult than Classic. The mechanics are more complex, the gameplay/level design is more complex, and the sprites are way, way more complex. It's far from insurmountable, but it would certainly take more time.

Zero in X is a really satisfying change in gameplay, though. Definitely takes getting used to at all times close combat, especially after gitting gud at the previous 3, but I'd say it's rewarding if you love challenge. I was able to visibly see improvement with each time Slash Beast kept killing me with my low health until I finally brought him down with at least 1/3 of it remaining. You absolutely need to train your reaction time to even play post SNES X without dying from a series of everything ramming into you alone and it isn't subtle about or ashamed of it, either.

That literally hurt my eyes when I first saw it. It was the first time I ever had actual eye pain from a shitty game.

I played Megaman X2 when I was in the first grade and discovering all those doors was the tightest shit ever. I don't know why you think they suck.

According to the wiki, Jet Stingray's attack was on the city's power facility as a diversion to draw the attention of Maverick Hunters, which makes sense, considering the first half of the stage seems to be in a massive hydroelectric dam. That's not as bad as attacking a city's population centers. But I wonder where they got that info from.

It's more classic than X but so far it's pretty damn good. Copy dial.dat into the fonts folder for the english translation it's incomplete but you can figure nearly everything out.
Honestly I agree. It's kind of a shame we don't have games where you can go incredibly fast while dodging all sorts of shit and fighting back similar to the X/Zero games. I've always felt like the X games never really reached their full potential, and playing the first 6 of the series again I kind of feel cheated by some of the levels, either they don't provide much of a challenge, or they're very short, or they're somewhere in between, or too reliant on a certain gimmick that completely kills any and all chances of going fast(I think this starts by X4, but it really shows itself hard in X8, especially where nearly every level in X8 has some room where you're locked in and you have to kill very slowly spawning enemies until the game decides you've killed enough) or in the case of X6 or the Zero Stages in X5, the stage is utter bullshit unless you use a subweapon or a gigaattack or a "fuck spikes" armor to get past all the bullshit. One of the zero stages in particular was the biggest load of fucking shit with the instant kill lasers, they had some extremely pinpoint times to dodge if you weren't using the time stop ability.
A lot of the MMX bosses too are pretty lame. I don't think of any boss that really puts the hurt on you(that isn't a final boss) that isn't Magma Dragoon, the U555, Squid Adler/Volt Kraken, Blaze Heatnix, Metal Shark Player, Rainy Turtloid and Infinity Mijnion. You can bring up the likes of Nightmare Mother but that's just super bullshit extreme.

I fucking love the lava hazard and always have. The way they implemented it and how to avoid it is really exciting and adds more tension and a feeling of desperately clinging to any safety as it unforgivingly rushes all around you every couple of seconds instead of just making sure not to fall in it.

ZX is fun as shit and it has a really cool concept with the Biometals. I can't believe X fans were so against this kind of evolution in the palm of your hands to boot.

Wish Aile had more of a rack since she's 15 and more unique sprites. Vent seems a little bland for some reason as a character compared to her.

ZX has a lot of interesting ideas but it went fucking hardcore goofy with the magic-girl stuff for something presented as a sequel to the much grittier Zero series, up to and including continuing its artstyle. Even with that though I quite like both games and I like Axl enough that seeing him acknowledged whatsoever past X7 and X8 through Advent was fun along with the mild insinuation it's probably not Axl giving that little bastard consciousness since it's based off of Albert and not Axl

This. ZX was just dumb in a lot of respects. The story and writing are beyond boring, the art direction was yet another step down after Zero put it on the wrong path, and the Metroidvania world element was implemented so poorly it was to the point of being obnoxious. I know that the story shouldn't annoy too much, considering the genre, but even ignoring the fact that Mega Man is actually DEEPEST LORE territory, when a game has cutscenes and FMVs, they start to weigh into opinions on the game as a whole.

When it came out, I had mixed opinions about the concept of biometals too, but I figure it might be able to work in a game that's tonally different. If they wanted to bring Mega Man back to being relatively upbeat after the issues of X and Zero, that's fine, but this wasn't the way to do it. In retrospect, the ZX games aren't terrible, but they don't have as much appeal as the X and Zero games. However, I still like them more than their contemporary, StarForce.

Truth be told I barely paid attention to ZX's story just because of how little there actually was for it, the entire thing was a massive retread of X1 in a lot of respects (up to and including Area D incorporating large segments of and minibosses from the opening highway stage) and I've always had the niggling suspicion that was the point. The FMVs got grating though.

Advent I can appreciate for more or less doing away with the Metroidvania bent considering there's still a hub-area, but each level's behind a door. I do wonder though why the Zero series and ZX tried to do away with copy-abilities as much as they did; Zero didn't get copy-abilities until Z2, then didn't seem to really do them right until Z4, and I was expecting Model X or Model Z to have some form of copy-ability to counteract that they were hellishly basic and more than a few Pseudoroids had moves that could correspond to MMZ techniques. A true copy-system didn't come until Advent and even then it was pretty much a glorified Biometal selection wheel and the ability to copy bosses for the one or two segments where a boss's form is actually needed.

Holy shit, Ashe really is the best girl. She's the sassiest, smugest and sexiest and her character is just great. Even her voice is attractive to me for some reason. There's just something about it.

I'm so glad there's plenty of good porn. Advent felt pretty boring at parts, though. The story is a complete yawn and every single boss isn't fun to use that isn't Buckfire. At least she came of it. Still wish Model A wasn't so fucking bland, not even in the same ballpark of fun as Model ZX, and actually used those 2 Busters outside of Giga Crush and some new Biometals in general. There's just something dissatisfying about copying everything exact, even voices, instead of creating something inspired by it. Time to save a few lewds

That level in particular is easily the best of the 8. It's long, it has multiple branching paths, it's challenging, has a cool miniboss, cool music and a sweet boss.

The Biometals just seem like they're continuing the lean towards supernatural with a perfect blur between science and magic. Mythical machines that contain the "soul" of legends and lend you their power if you can handle it. They're straightforward yet mysterious at the same time on what exactly gives X and Zero such a transcendental presence even considering their impact on history and it's a really cool clever way to have heroes old and new team up to fight new threats like their power.

Of all of the robots built during the era where building a cognitively human-like robot was a goal, which one was the most human? They all have problems.

Mega Man tried the hardest to be human because he was built for that purpose, but he had a tailored personality and lacked free will, and is therefore fundamentally disqualified.
Proto Man was the same, but had free will and renounced his role, ironically making him more human than he was meant to be. But he seemingly never learned to reconcile this with having a place in the world.
Bass appears to have free will, but is actually just acting out orders in an unorthodox manner. However, Duo implied that Bass actually was capable of good, and this was never elaborated upon.
X had "free will," but his activation, (and presumably his continued function, if the Suffering Circuit is canon) was contingent upon him not being evil, and which suggests that his version of free will was stunted.
Zero seemed to have no limitations to his free will, but his consciousness was just an amalgam of other people's wills, which blurs things. The "real" Zero was essentially a rabid animal.

What exactly does it mean to have free will, though? Most humans are at least as stunted as anything you've described.

Supposedly Mega and Proto are pretty well able to do whatever the hell they want because of their intentionally broad directives; that being "be Dr. Light's son", formerly "help around the lab" in Rock's case. Duo's implication about Bass is probably that Wily has a bizarre penchant for making anti-hero robots and Bass is good at his core, he's just obsessed with beating Mega Man because that's what he was programmed to do.

X having free will is part of why I disregard the Suffering Circuit since it goes against everything Light was trying to go for with X by putting a massive damper on his normal decision making, and ergo stripping him of free will, even if the accidental century of ethics-testing in a capsule did pretty much the same thing, though it's more akin to indoctrination rather than having a shock-collar. He's under no less rigid strictures than Robot Masters are if the Suffering Circuit is taken into account. Zero himself is an odd case since he's animalistic on his own, and even with that goofy Super Saiyan bit in X5 where he "awakens" he's still pretty much just a battle robot to take down Mega Man/X. Apparently the only reason he's lucid is he's technically a Maverick, ie deviating from his baseline behavior.

If anything it would be the Reploids that descend from X which have true free will as they have no expectations placed upon them other than normal societal pressure, though there's frequent allusions to "the government" defining Maverick as anything which suits it at the moment going by Repliforce.

It's unclear how free will is defined within the universe, but it seems to take for granted that it does exist. If it's something that can be quantified, then it may simply be the ability to come up with original ideas based on input, rather than weighing all input against a specific set of directives. In which case, it's not a matter of answering the question of whether free will exists contrary to the idea that everything is just a chain reaction playing out, but a much more direct question of how abstract they're capable of thinking. But then, this is a series where good and evil are objective forces, so that interpretation may be misguided.

It's pretty clear by the time X4 rolls around that "Maverick" is barely different from the UN calling a group terrorists/radicals.

Their explanation is that Zero got pumped so full of Maverick juice from Sigma suffusing him with his virus (which is itself a mutated form of Zero's original virus) that it repaired his programming; that goofy floating Super Saiyan is the "real" Zero and his behavior as a Maverick Hunter and buddy to X is what he's like as a Maverick. He's pretty much what Wily always wanted him to be, a brainless killing-machine to finally take down Mega Man (or X, whichever; of note is that Nightmare Zero in X6 says "blue robot" when recalling Zero's purpose and not "blue reploid" or anything).

They're not separate things. The Maverick Virus evolves, using which robots it's infected as the basis for how it changes. The Sigma Virus is just an earlier iteration of the Maverick Virus in which Sigma's programming is manifested most strongly, which was an accident. The Zero Virus is an iteration in which Zero's programming is manifested most strongly, which is presumably the intended version, assuming there was ever meant to be a specific form.

I'm still trying to understand how Sigma became effectively transcendental with his mental code merging with the virus that consumed him, even to the point where they became one and the same with a now fallen and renegade Sigma calling the shots on what they do together. It's a cool idea and clarifying that Sigma seeks the evolution of Reploids and believes humanity can only spiral downwards now redeems him tremendously as a villain as opposed to the cliche faggot he seemed like before with uncredibly thinking humans were just holding them back, but it's still weird and leaves a sour taste how Sigma seems to become more insane and evil of his free will even though he was originally glitched out into this state. It's hard to say if he's really "genuine" as a villain and his motivations and not subtly sperging out with it visibly worsening each game.

Sigma may still be an individual, but is ultimately a pawn of the virus. He's just the best robot to have been infected, and therefore the physical form and MO that the virus took on. He isn't so much calling shots as he's deciding how the end goal is achieved, like an employee that has creative autonomy. The virus has the ability to treat matter, energy, and data as equivalents, and slowly manipulate the physical world anywhere it's already been present, which is why Sigma is able to return constantly. It just takes some time to reconstitute him from his consciousness/programming and DNA data, which is retained. This is why he's the same Sigma repeatedly, rather than successive copies, as his stream of consciousness that exists within the virus is presumably the original.
Assuming that motivation is still canon, despite MHX2's cancellation, the most likely answer would be that he genuinely did have opinions in that direction prior to being infected, but is now acting it out in the most destructive manner possible in accordance with the virus's appetite for destruction, which it seems to have gotten from Zero.
He does appear less sane with each iteration. Speculatively, if it's possible to kill him permanently by destroying him while he's not reconstructed properly, as suggested in X8, then it's implicitly possible to damage the data that the virus has stored, under various circumstances. It seems like there's damage to his original personality each time he's reconstructed, and it's more and more of the virus filling in the blanks. But that could just be wishful thinking filling in for lazy writing.

Day of Sigma seems to have had a lot of work and thought put into it along with MHX, the game it ties into, so they're clearly canon since they were intended to be a remake of the series with some changes. Obviously, X and anything after with Vile just get a little bit of a retcon with changes to him and Sigma himself.

A lot of healthy morality boils down to simple beliefs on what people should and shouldn't do to each other and other things. If anything's stunted, it's almost certainly being misled.

Does anyone else feel similar? It can't be a coincidence Prismatic was used for the Collection menu itself and the song in particular sounds conclusive in a way. I would have loved to see what direction ZX might have taken and what Zero would know about events leading up to it long after him and Ciel finish dealing with Weil.

I really just want to ask why this game is loved so much? The original, that is. It was pretty fun until Sigma, which seemed to just be a "did you get all the upgrades" check, which isn't very fun when upgrades are usually hidden. I knew of the one in mammoth man's stage, and got the one in the forest stage, but beyond that I was pretty lost.
Also, the part's between actually facing off with the purple guy mid Sigma stage 1 and boomerkurwang-what's-his-name were a MASSIVE fucking slog. I'm glad I got the game from the N3DS freeshop, if just because of save states, despite some massive lag sometimes, because I had to do that wall jumping sections so many times, usually because I ran out of missiles due to enemies RESPAWNING WHEN YOU GO OFF SCREEN I FUCKING HATE THAT. Wasn't until just a few minutes ago I learned that there is apparently a jump upgrade???
I am by no means a casual, I won't say I'm a pro either but I was not walking in expecting this game to be babbies first vidya, I knew this would be hard. Needless to say, having that turned on my head with bullshit difficulty is not enjoyable. I think there's a fine line between a game having difficulty that you can surpass and
the game telling you "lol no you have to go find the 7 chaos emeralds before you can beat shadow the robot".
Again, why do people love this game so much? Are the future games any better about this kind of shit? I really want to enjoy these games as I love the mechanics but the bullshit difficulty gets in the way.

Sigma's piddly if you stick to walljumps. He'll triangle-jump up after you, then down after you if you land while he's in the air doing that. Repeat.
You need the head upgrade from Storm Eagle's stage you need Fire Wave to get the one in Flame Mammoth's, and Mammoth's isn't actually necessary since you'll get Zero's buster on his death if you didn't get Light's buster parts. Dash boots are in Chill Penguin's stage and forced on you, and you already found the armor in Sting Chameleon's stage.
Classic series did that as well in the longer segments; if you went off-screen, enemies would respawn. I can't advice anything for that but gitgudicin.
No, there isn't. You might be thinking of the leg parts/dash boots. You can do a dashing jump, though.
Depends on the game, but in X2 and onward you start out with the dash, so that's one less upgrade you need to find/have forced on you. They prolly should've just started you off with the dash since so much of the game and enemy behavior revolves around the assumption you have it.

Everything's doable without the armor parts, but it's harder. Sigma's intended to hit like a truck since he's something of an X-like boss due to his mobility and walljumps. Now you get to find the Hadouken.

I now realize that my post implied I even made it it Sigma. I meant to say I only made it to the first Sigma stage, the last point I left off was kurwang in part 1 because getting up that wall jump area drained all my weapons, so I had to just grind the one respawning enemy at the top for health and such and got bored and stopped.
I guess so, I honestly haven't looked at any guides for this mostly because I don't want to, but I shouldn't need to, so I have no idea what all is even in the game.

Heart Tanks, Sub Tanks, and armor parts are all the hidden collectibles, along with what I mentioned in the spoiler. Have to find all of those to get the spoiler-item; you can find them all easily just by exploring. A note that kicking off of a wall with blocks that can be broken by a jump from the head parts will also break it, so you don't need the head parts to get a heart tank in Flame Mammoth's stage. Kill the mole-shaped plows in Armored Armadillo's stage. Boomerang Cutter can be used to grab items that're outside your reach.

What? Cleverly hunting down and being rewarded with actual upgrades is my favorite part next to the speed and flexibility of these amazing games that gives them so many hours of replayability time and again, something ZX Advent sorely lacked to me, but I don't fully want to get rid of, least of all for Ashe.

The developers put these different kinds of fancy and sometimes cool looking powerups in the games as rewards for exploring their worlds and hunting them down seamlessly in between blowing shit away left and right and they're not hard to discover on your own with enough thinking and experimenting with all your resources.

I have no doubt the intro level and Chill Penguin serve as a perfect evolution of gameplay of familiarity from the classic series to a more rewardingly speed focused and reaction time training and testing game that subliminally is forced to happen as you go through it.

I sucked at Megaman before properly playing through X and starting this thread a month ago plenty of sympathizing anons have helped keep going with great discussion you have to work for on Holla Forums and within that time I've grown to absolutely love and worship the series and its successors for everything it does right and makes satisfying alongside my progression in skill to easily slip into Zero's shoes come X4 and prepare for his own mercilessly difficult melee focused series directly following up from its predecessor in both world and gameplay. Everything I love about, consider worth hours of playing through and coming back to repeat and want to see more of and include myself was captured continuously Someone on the team throughout X, X2, and X4 to Zero and the first ZX masterfully almost frighteningly well planned for and executed this to the point it almost becomes second nature. The natural progression of skill between these games and anything in between can't be a coincidence.
