Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are absolute trash that are only liked because of nostalgia.
They have zero polish in levels to the point of just pressing forward on a controller after certain boosters will cause collision bugs making you fall through the levels.
The reason most 3D sonic games sucked shit is because Sonic Team used SA1 and 2(which were well received for some reason) as a standard of quality.

But all the recent 3D sonic games (sans boom) are good.

Played a bit of Sonic CD on PC and Sonic Adventure waiting for Mania, Adventure so far (after playing the first level) feels like a no fun allowed railroad that if you dare to leave for one second you die with no way to recover, the weird physics also don't help. I hope the rest of the game isn't like that

Gameplay-wise, the final boss of Sonic Colors since it has a combination of speed and all the powers you've accumulated throughout the game. Design-wise, probably Death Egg Robot.

Well Mania hired a fan game maker, the retro style comic was done by that guy who did the parody comic with Nipples the Enchilada, and fans have been pretty vocal since forever.

I'd argue if Mania doesn't flop, they might just let the comic guys write one.
Though that particular scene might be "too dark" for a kids game; or so the producers will say. Comics tend to get away with more shit (lots of talking, more characters, more complex plots than run for dozens of issues, and subplots that can last over 50, etc)

That heat gauge idea is actually pretty good, since it would encourage players to not just boost2win all the time, could make for some interesting level design too.

Aye, you'd need to make the levels have basically areas where boosting is the only way to access them, thus making it so you need to conserve it via not taking boost areas earlier in the level or knowing which ones to take VS more platforming heavy segments.

since adventure the game's characters have been very visually appealing, aside from some the humans who aren't robotnik
the comics also have that same visual appeal in later issues and in some other ones, and they also are during some parts appealing on a conceptual level, though the execution isn't so good during some parts of it

in addition, adventure 1 and 2 could have been done a LOT better, even with only sonic levels; theres a fangame in development called sonic utopia that figured out how to do it right; vid related, and also a .webm in the next post to show that it isn't a gigantic sandbox, but just a level with alot of varying pathways

imo the best-designed levels across adventure 1 and 2 were final rush and sky rail, though sky rail would've been better without those flying bumpers

I think part of the problem is the tech for a 'good' sonic game hasn't really been here until recently. Fundementally sonic is about zooming around a place. That has existed but one big enough? I'd argue probably not. Imagine something (broadly speaking) like Breath of the Wild where sonic zooms around storming bases with biomes being zones instead. Sonic adventure was bad, but I honestly give it a (grudging) pass because it was very, very clearly trying to do something different and new and explore other gameplay options. Some of them worked, many didn't, and SA2 did improve upon things that were kept from SA1.

I can even get how Sonic's (and Shadow's) was overall better than the original. Sonic Adventure for mostly nostalgic reasons. I really like Taxman's remake of Sonic CD as well as Sonic Generations though. Been meaning to try Unleashed, the Advance games are also pretty alright.
I don't particularly favor any one of the… what, ten canons Sonic has? I tend to just mix them in my head anywho. I like SegaSonic's atmosphere the most though.

Sonic lost world is so fucking cool in terms of design and comfyness. Seeying redesigned old enemies and awesome colors powers being put into good use is fucking amazing.

The gameplay and bosses were shit. That's why I didn't like the game.

I thought it was a decent game, but the run button was a bad idea; it could be done with analogue triggers, but LW was originally released on Wii U, a console that only had digital triggers - they should've just used the adventure controls. The parkour was both finicky and underutilized and most of the wisps felt forced (some of them were just pointless, like the music and black hole wisps). It's a 6/10
Boom was going to happen regardless of what people thought of Lost World, it started development in 2010 and Sega still would've had to sacrifice it to the Wii U because of the exclusivity deal.

I hope Sonic Mania has weird or cool secret images like Sonic CD. Taxman and Stealth both started out in the Sonic hacking scene, and they have a history of implementing secret stuff in the Sonic iOS remakes, so I think it's somewhat likely that they'll implement something similar.

Not to mention the controls in general are ass. And the wisps are annoying and boil down to "PRESS X TO AWESOME" while the music is replaced with a shitty techno loop and Sonic comes to a complete stop for 3 seconds. And the artstyle consists of flat, boring Mario colors and simple shapes, with the sole exception of the NiGHTS level.

Don't fucking do it. I made the same mistake of believing the autistic hype but that shit is nothing but 95% autism and bad writing that only gets by on cheap fan wank. The only period it was ever even remotely good was during its earliest issues by Mike G who just wrote the comic as a humorous episodic shit for kids.

Flynn is a hack and even wrote some of the worst episodes of Sonic Boom. Most of the time he's just circlejerking with his sjw buddies on Bumbleking forums where he comes up with the dumbest and most convoluted lore ideas that almost rival Penders in terms of lunacy while teasing that Sally x Nicole is canon. The only reason he comes off as good is because Sega put so many restrictions on him to keep his own autism in check. If Penders had been given just as many restrictions by Sega during his run you'd probably think he was a great writer too.
