The game's foundation is the problem in and of itself. It feels more like a knock off made by come chinese company with an actual budget, and I don't think some camera controls will fix that.
Yeah, Unity isn't great but I'm sure the engine will develop over time and now that Playtonic actually has a game out maybe they can expand on it for their next game or use something else.

The game just wasn't any fun to play. The hub world was confusing and boring to navigate, every single world was unimaginative and just a carbon copy of other platformers and the characters were dull and boring.

That's true but what Banjo was really good at was big levels and exploration and the influence it had on Sunshine and later 3D platformers shouldn't be understated. YL plays almost exactly like BK because it's what they promised in their kickstarter but maybe their next game will be more like Mario.

I think besides the technical problems the game still suffers from a myriad of deep design flaws that can't be fixed without reworking a vast majority of the game.
Possibly the most annoying being the level design, how the "level expansion" mechanic works and the fact that there was absolutely no care if placing hitboxes where the player shouldn't be able to go.
Being able to climb on the geometry of the walls is just a very clear indication that not enough time was spent on the game and it was pushed out the door way before it was ready.
Nioh isn't, Yakuza 0 isn't, Automata isn't, all of those released this year on the same platform and have way more going on graphically than Yooka-Laylee does. Weak excuse.
