Good news is they're using a new animation engine, and all the models look new & original.

Death not so much. He was working to the bone, allergic to cats, and his girlfriend kept getting cats.
They say he died of reacting poorly to anesthetic from "routine surgery"- but that could be to lessen the blow/drama with the GF. The donation drive to support the family allegedly all went to the GF instead. They also said she pulled the plug before the family even saw Monty (they were still flying in the air). A few months after all this, and she now has bigger boobs.

What's suspicious is a letter sent out by one of the ex-animators (Shane). He's pretty fanatical, and depressed (that depression had to come from somewhere)- but he paints a pretty negative picture of RT. Basically, Monty wanted to wrestle control away from RT (or at least, work on it in an environment away form RT). RT wanted to avoid it being a one-man show- but they fucked up in every regard. The back-up system meant Monty had to re-make every asset basically. Animators Monty wanted weren't hired, and people he didn't want to work on it were. VAs Monty chose were replaced between seasons. Animators begged to work in another animation program, so they could build a stronger portfolio (and now they have it, their work still looks fucking amateur hour). Monty worked in a very free-flowing format (not saying that's always a good thing), while the rest of the staff wanted storyboards and the like. However RT allegedly hates Monty's GF like poison. One of the characters was originally based on her (Monty tended to take positive traits of people around them and rank them up to 11 for characters), but RT changed her and reduced her role to what we saw in "Season" 3. Shane for some reason sees no ill in her. When Monty went, everything went their way fast. Shane complained every time, until he was asked by a techie to hand over his hard-drive for some update they needed to do. He was then asked to see the boss. Boss let him go, he goes back to his desk, finds they took everything off his personal hard-drive (salvaging what little decent animation they had left). Shane then writes the open-letter airing the bullshit, and the community manager takes a picture of herself crying to "defuse" the situation. Apparently the higher-ups constantly tell the animation team motivational shit- for Monty, how it's such an honor to work on the show, etc- not that it made the most recent season any less of a shit-show. Even on /rwby/ we joked "You can enjoy it, but don't call it good" regarding the first 3 seasons. They had plot-holes, VAs could be better, but it was never boring. It was fun, or action, or semi-ok drama. Season 4 had the worst action. Monty worked to the soundtrack of a scene, and it shows when comparing Season 1-2 to 3-4. Everything had a rhythm, everything just clicked better and was more interesting to look at- albeit nothing had weight. Season 4 was just generic. Without the fights & music to support it, and worse writers in charge, the sow just nose-dived. It had a charm that kept people watching it past it's flaws. Now most of us on /rwby/ wait for webm uploads rather than give RT a click.

A voice actress from the show basically said in a tweet "The fact [voice actress] is dating the boss helped her get the role. You're an idiot if you think otherwise." So I'd bet her role could be dramatically reduced next season, but it also shows brown-nosing is the name of the game within the company. Not to mention most of the staff heavily lean left (meaning those who don't toe the line or get ousted I imagine).

Monty's death wasn't suspicious. He was exhausted, with a girlfriend who had him by the balls, and a boss who wanted to take something interesting (albeit flawed) and make it work the same way every other western animation house does- when they only had 2 or 3 people who could decently animate.
Frankly I'm surprised he didn't fake his death.

It also hit a lot of people quite hard because he was an autist- he worked tirelessly for animation and fight choreography. He'd look up martial arts. He'd buy special DVD players so he could watch CGI movies frame-by-frame to see how they moved and when motion blur was used. RWBY was also his baby. A story he'd written tonnes of notes for- allegedly the show's bible. He had passion, and made his idea a reality. Then RT slowly made it their IP.

Hell, pick up any recent Platinum game instead.
It has the over-the-top set pieces and action that the show has.
You could prob get Bayo 2 and a WiiU for cheap if you scour around.

Oh boy! Let me tell you fuckers about RWBY.

Grimm Eclipse is a game that was initially put out as a reasonably fun Dynasty Warriors like game where you played one of four characters in a team - either PUG or with a team pre-made - and went in to kill monsters. Each character was played a bit differently even with the very simple mechanics - Ruby an OP little shit with no learning curve, Yang a powerhouse with the survivability meme, Weiss as fragile but with good special attack spam (able to specialize as AoE for mobs or spiking to become a boss killer) and healing (making her the only support), and Blake as using mobility to pretty much never get hit and a skill-set making her either the shittiest character with shit players or able to carry the team with a good one. You had buttons tied to each skill, your attack, and the health/shield mechanics, along with a special meter.

The devs dropped that. They added "heavy" attacks and fucked up how ranged weapons worked, then replaced the skill use with a shitty combo system that made every character player exactly the same way, just with different appearances. Each got an Ultimate bar for an AoE.

Let that sink in - They threw away the superior build of their game after going through all the effort of programming it.

Now RWBY itself? With all of the shit that Monty put out, there was a lot of very cool things. Many of the character designs are great, and since Monty was majorly into cosplay, nearly all of them can actually be fabricated pretty simply by someone with a bit of skill. The world, too, has a lot of cool features, and could be made into a pretty great setting. Except it's now in the hands of people talented enough to do that. In fact, with him dead, it has no talent left. The show looks even shittier in action than it did in earlier seasons, the writing and pacing somehow feels worse, and the only two good characters in it are probably going to die and end up a Trump stand-in (read: villain as far as the writers are concerned), respectively.

If I was rich enough I'd buy the fucking IP and all of Monty's notes. There was potential in it to actually do what Monty wanted - make a great "American anime". Not any more though.

RWBY only had two things going for it, the action and three ok characters that stand out due to most being meh to crap. When Monty died the first one was gone, and the second is basically gone as two are dead and the third is possibly dead. I'd have rather they stuck to what it was like with season one, where even the literally black background characters gave the show more character than when they put detail into it. With the main brains behind it dead, they rushed them out too quickly when with the short episodes they should have stay with it being school focused instead of fighting some great evil. At season four they should have been where they were at the end of two and the start of three, instead of all around the world. All I could say is don't watch it, and instead just look at the fanart for torchwick and neo. I wish these threads would stop being made so I could forget this exists.

The current state of the plot has General Ironwood about to close his county's borders and Make Atlas Great Again. How it'll play out isn't set in stone yet, but given that the current writers are full koolaid, we can make a pretty good guess. The other character he's referring to is probably Qrow, who's too much "the cool mentor character" to not die. Specifically, he's "the cool uncle that your family says is crazy," and his role within the story is literally to be the cool uncle who the protagonist's family says is crazy.

There's a good chance that if you have an estranged uncle that "went crazy," he didn't go crazy, he just stopped putting up with other people's bullshit.

The three good characters of the show have been Roman Torchwick (who is now dead), General Ironwood, and Qrow. Ruby herself is also alright, but she constantly fluctuates in confidence level and the writers don't know what they're doing with her character concept.

Neo is also cute, but she technically doesn't have any character to be a good or bad one with. And since Roman is dead and RT can't write for shit, she's probably going to finally open her mouth and end up being shit.

The saddest part about what's inevitably going to happen is that Qrow was essentially Monty's OC, and he's either on the trajectory for getting killed off or - possibly worse - getting beaten around constantly. Much like Monty himself was by RT while he was alive. And Ironwood - in every depiction in the earlier story - was always presented as an understanding person who cared a hell of a lot about everyone. But of course, since he's the military man who cares about security, it's obvious what they're going to do with him. The absolute best case scenario for him is to end up "the antagonist who gets beaten down by SJW bullshit into towing the line" (see also: Teagan).

The only saving grace to RWBY is a very autistic fandom that like Monty and don't actually like the show that much, so they make their own shit that's usually a lot better than any of the official stuff. Which is almost mind-numbingly stupid to think about.

I haven't played either, but I imagine both are better games than this piece of shit. At the very least, they can't be worse.

I played this garbage fire at a friend's place on his steam controller and boy oh fucking boy is it ever mediocre. Much like the show, it's not bad but it sure as hell isn't good either (definitely less good than the show though.)

That would be Monty Oum. Was famous back when he did crossover "animation" with final fantasy and dead or alive characters. Then got his own series with Rooster Teeth. The only real noteworthy thing is that he was killed by his wife forcing a cat on him because he was allergic to them. His death is honestly more interesting than anything he's ever done.

I don't think people are necessarily wrong for expecting there to be a plot. I mean, RWBY doesn't even meet the bare minimum. Your average trash anime action series can at least provide one dimensional characters and a plot that makes sense. RWBY can't manage to do either, characters are inconsistent and traits are dropped out of nowhere, turning them into uninteresting voids of nothingness, and the plot is glacial, confusing, and nonsensical.

Now that Monty's dead I don't know why anybody would watch it except to see the trainwreck. The action isn't even good anymore.

A lot of people at RT are on the left (Jack from AH, for example), some of them have a weird relationship with success and money, acting like cool kids, I remember a RT Podcast where Gavin was saying something like "I don't care if my latest iPhone doesn't have screen protection, if it breaks then I buy another one the next day", or that time where Gavin thought that it was ok to mistreat the disc drive of his 360 because they have a bunch of them in the office. Ray seemed like a good guy, I think he left AH because of the way they act (there was a minecraft episode I think where the AH crew was mocking Ray because he still had an old smartphone, all he said was that he didn't see the point of buying the latest expensive product if the one he has wasn't broken).
Also RWBY is shit like most of the original content made by RT.

Don't play it. It's garbage, even for an RPG Maker fangame. You will waste your time playing it, trying to find anything positive about it only to find more garbage that makes you want to strangle the developer.

What happened?

In Vale of Darkness you make a shitty OC and then wander around a shitty maze fighting the same enemies for hours for no reason, then at the end of the game you awkwardly play videogames with Ruby and get erased from fucking existence. Then there's the sequel where your super-special snowflake OC somehow becomes even edgier and kills everybody.

The idea was probably to make a persona clone with rwbys but it's unbelievably incompetent (and leveling up relationships doesn't even do anything). The endings and the ensuing edginess are pretty hilarious but everything up until that point is boring.

The highlights of it are the cutscenes ripped straight from the show as video files (so your OC isn't even in them) and the in-engine cutscenes where you can switch which character's at the front of you party and have Ruby talking to Ruby because nobody gave a shit testing this game. You can also enjoy the hilarious trick corridors, where holding one direction will make you endlessly walk back and forth through the door because the game was made by a twelve year old.

It's the bad kind of "shitty RPGmaker game".

Steam wants to enter a market it was never designed to enter. At this point though, I don't even know who you would blame, as the consumer has more then enough complete legal options to get the series for free. Maybe they want to see if steam users are so lazy they won't even do a google search for the series.

You already have people going on Steam having overlapping interests with things not being exploited that very well could. It is a digital distribution platform, after-all. I'm surprised it just took them more than 8 years to really try.

To watch someone else play it? Maybe. To play it yourself? No.

Besides all the obvious shit quality the game (and the show) have, I agree with your friend, the beta was more fun for me. I think is mostly because you had 3 different buttons for each one of the special moves, instead of having one special (ultimate) by itself and the other as combos finishers, making for more varied ways to play each character, and it also made them feel more different between each other too.
