It's fun I guess, it had me really engrossed earlier on, but now I'm not as inclined to play it. For reasons largely said in this thread already, once you fill out the map, you've seen most of what the game has to offer, as it just offers variants of the same stuff everywhere.
It certainly is impressive how big the world is, how much you can see of it, the fact that it doesn't just break anywhere, the level of freedom you have, etc.
And while I get this is the game the team has wanted to make since the first one, I can't help but think the way the series developed overtime due to not being able to, was the better direction to take it. Because as much as they tout this was inspired by the first Zelda, it's really more WRPG Zelda, and a pretty shallow one at that.
Really, BotW feels like a step back in a lot of ways. There's only 4 dungeons, each of which is piss easy. You don't get any upgrades like you did in the past (boomerang, hookshot, etc) nor any items from the dungeons. I get why they did it, to not make it impossible to do something in the game without the specific item, but it's still just not very "Zelda" in execution.
Not to mention the music, good god the music. Now this is where it's irrefutably a step back from Skyward Sword. Yes Skyward Sword was horrendously paced, wasted your time, held your hand, etc, but the OST is fantastic. Just listen to the theme and you'll have an idea of the kind of game they were trying to build.
But BotW's OST is like it's afraid to have any memorable tunes, lest it get in the way of the atmosphere. I mean hell, they removed gamepad functionality because it did, and the game absolutely suffers because of the weaker OST. If you don't believe me, imagine Wind Waker and just try to tell me you aren't hearing at least one song from that game in your head right now.
TL;DR it's an okay open world game, it's a terrible Zelda game and a step back in nearly every aspect, in that regard.
There's the weapon mounts in your house, at least.
But I don't think that's what you're talking about, right?
