The free version was pretty much finished and would have easily passed as a finished game on Steam, but the devs added a fuckton of levels, bosses, and improved animations to justify adding a price tag.

Why the fuck can't epic get off their asses and stop twiddling their thumbs and just release the unreal/unreal tournament source code? They said they could, but middleware stuff like drivers would be a problem. I don't see why they can't just release what they can and let the community do the rest since they don't really care much about a 20 year old engine.

There's a FOSS engine for Cave Story. Only works with the original assets though.
