Let's celebrate our favourite medieval kicking simulator's decennial anniversary with some replays. Hopefully you haven't uninstalled it. I don't have the WEBM for this, sorry for the embed

Orc Porn?
Kick porn :^)
...
Back when Skyrim was about to come out, Holla Forums was hyped for it because there were rumors that people that worked on DMoMM were going to work on it as part of the team, thus implementing it's combat system into the game.
Unfortunately only a small part of the team was involved in the end (like 2 people? i think?) and additionally the TES team just fucking sucks at giving the player feedback for melee combat, period.
You can sorta see the influence with the "two hands" system where you can equip different things to each hand, i still think the whole "equpping a spell" on one hand and a sword on the other is pretty cool and isn't a bad system, but without proper combat to go along with it, and especially proper balance, it's all completely wasted.
F
No.
Xana porn.
We can never go back.
THIS WAS A UBISOFT GAME
Arkane won't be allowed to ever make a good game as long as they're in zenimax's belly.
Enjoy.
Being able to combine spells and weapons smoothly without cumbersome switching is pretty cool and EYE Divine Cybermancy handled it pretty well.
...
Has nothing tried to emulate the greatness of this game? I remember seeing a similar game where I believe it was a dungeon crawler(no it's not Arx Fatalis, it was yet to be released), where you got to kick skeletons and shit.
You should give it a try, it's a pretty good game.
Good old times. I should search for my DVD and install it again.
Why do I keep uninstalling it to play modern garbage?
Everytime someone mentions it I need to fucking play it.
Everytime someone mentions Skyrim I feel like fucking playing it.
Perhaps the next TES will take baby steps towards being more DMoMM-like.
FO4 did have better melee combat compared to past gamebryo games, but not by much.
Maybe in 30 years or so it'll have a semi-decent melee system with at least SOME feedback.
user, the next TES will have the same combat as Skyrim, only this time you will have poorly done control removing "cinematic" sword/shield clashes everytime you do a strong swing.
Also, no spears, no good main quest and barely any RPG and Gamebryo.
Shalome goy. Have pre ordered this years assassin creed?
...
Ooooh baby, DMoM&M thread on Holla Forums.
Reinstalling it again
...
I'm going to reinstall and play it again. I've only completed it once and used a warrior build. This time i'm planning to focus more on magic, any advice on how to play as a mage?
Buy an SD card and try to booth and play it
Use the stick and kick until you get superpowers.
Get all the element attacks first or else the orcs will rekt you.
Just cast shit and enemy die. Also use Cold spells on ground.
Main telekinesis and ice spell. Most fun you can get from magic
Mage can be annoying as hell endgame. The only reason to play mage is to make enemies slip on ice and throw shit around with telekinesis. I would rather play thief.
Remember mod tools were developed but Ubisoft told Arkane not to release them.
TK oil onto enemy + fire bolt = dead
TK head-sized rock at enemy = dead
TK barrel, hold over fire so it catches, hold against enemies = dead
You can use this stuff to easily clear everything up to the first zombies. By that point you should have Sanctuary, good mana regen, and a staff and can just invincible battlemage your way through the rest of the game.
SDK was released on 2013

Thanks for the advice, it's mostly what I expected but still good to know.
I mianly want to play it because I mained warrior the first time and never messed around with the spells. Focusing on telekinesis and using the enviroment sounds pretty fun.
...
Literally the only game to do first person pre-modern combat right.
Exactly.
I wish fire trap didn't have to compete with freeze, it's such a fun spell.
Plus I got a new PC recently, so I can easily play it on max settings, although I can't really tell the difference.
It's surprising how much fun the whole thing is once you get past the first few levels. Shrinking and then shooting firebolts at them while they run around wildly never gets old.
R.I.P. Arkane. Destroyed by Bethesda, never shall we see Arx Fatalis 2.
*hammer .fgd list of entity names file
Besides that, whatever The Crossing was going to be is likely going to be a big turd if it ever happens. Zenimax got the trademark.
I still need to do a full playthrough of Arx Fatalis, the rune drawing system seemed really neat though and I can easily imagine it being a great magic system later on.
She was a much better choice than that mage lady who thinks you choosing to not purge Xana from you means you're evil.
I had great fun at first, being outnumbered and having to run around throwing shit and hit 'n running. Then I found out hazards were really overpowered and you could stand in the corner and kick every enemy into an instakill fire or pit. Then the game gave me a strong elemental sword and a stun shield that let me kill everything with no effort. Then I couldn't be bothered to finish the game.
It's alright. Still gives me a boner because you can see your whole body head down.
Jokes on you, TES VI will have new graphic engine, trust me
...
The Dead Island devs are/were working on something called Hellraid. I think that's what you mean. Betrayer also sounds close.
There is this arxendofsun.solarsplace.com
It is a fanmade game, but so far so good
Fuck I love this game, I've beaten it so many times. I wish there were more like it. Its a shame Skyrim didn't let Arcane studios do their thing with the combat.
All my Dark Messiah replays end when I near the end of the island.
Not like the rest of the game is shit or anything, but the island is just so good it makes anything after it seem like it's not worth playing.
Think I'll honor Arkane with a replay of Arx, instead.

Ever heard of piracy buyfag?
Wow, for once I'm surprised even you fags would gobble up this bug ridden mess
Wait, are you talking about EYE, Dark Messiah or both?
...
Play EYE instead. Don't let this fantasy metastreumonic force contaminate you.
But EYE is also objectively shitty sourcemod and bug ridden mess.
Both EYE and Dark Messiah are fun.
So you like your sourcemods French, huh? Y'know Arkane Studios were Frenchies as well?
Your legs will never get better
Were. They stopped to make more zombie games. Closest things we have to it are Dead Island Riptide and Vermintide.
The heinous part about this is that it looked like it was coming along very nicely. Did they just look at their budget and think, 'oh shit, we need shovelware or we're going to go under' and thus made more zombie shovelware? Or did they just decide the market wouldn't go after fantasy hack & slashing co-op dungeon crawling, because reasons? Are they ever going to take it off the backburner at this point?
Yep, it's Hellraid. A shame about it.
Ubisoft used to make good games.
all the demon generals are capable of making cool stuff
whoops
Funny how DM Arantir was much cooler than HoMM Arantir.
I want millennials to leave.
wat
hes black and cant read
Redundant redundancy.
I'm sad I missed out on this when it first came out, but man this is fantastic.
How far into the game until kicking becomes effective? I'm only very early in the game (just got woken up by the city guards trying to kill me) and kicking is just pitiful. I see all these clips of orcs being sent flying but the guards only stagger. It's not even possible to kick them onto environmental shit like spikes because they don't get knocked back far enough.
Combat in general is shit. There's no fun in both of you sitting there holding block until the other attacks, and then attacking right after you block him. You end up spending several seconds at a time in a staring contest before the AI gets bored and attacks despite it being clear whoever swings first loses. The kicking animation takes longer to hit than their sword attack, so it can't be used to break their block.
And even if you do patiently go through the cycle of blocking and counterattacking and get to the point of knocking them down, they just get right back up. The game claims I can finish them while they're down but nothing works.
I just started playing it too. Kick them when they are near any hazard like the wall spikes or ledges and they seem to go flying lol. My only complaints so far is stealth is pretty lame, and magic regen is SLOW. Hope it speeds up later on.
Oh btw for finishing faggots off, you have to do a charge attack then aim at the body WHILE they are still knocked over. If they are getting up, then I seem to always just do the power attack which restarts me at step 1 lol. Guess it is just a short window for pulling it off (or I still suck at this game timing wise since I only just tried it).
Become proficient.
Try power attacks, throwing shit, and staves to stagger them before kicking, but since you haven't figured this out already then this game may not be for you.
You didn't miss it, user. You just got on late.
In order to kick someone over properly, they have to either be already staggered(i.e. from getting hit with a box or heavy attack and then following up quickly with a kick) or they have to be positioned in such a way that they would fall into a hazard. Have to be pretty close for that latter one.
You're a nerd. Being aggressive is better. If they are blocking, kick them and then follow up with a heavy attack.
You just walk up and heavy attack to finish someone.
Kicking is a tool, not a weapon- Sun Tzu, 2001
how did sun tzu get so smart
git gud, no really
kicking does nothing but briefly stagger enemies in combat, but it sends them flying when they are weakened or if there's a death trap/fire/bottomless pit behind them. Additionally you can throw/kick items at enemies to knock them out.
What you're doing (constantly waiting for a counterstrike) is boring. You can cancel into a parry right away, so you're free to constantly attack enemies with Power Strikes (in order to get them in a good position where you can kick them into something deadly, the direction of your power strikes also affects your enemy's position) as most enemy attacks are telegraphed decently enough.
You can use fire to light enemies up easily. There are plenty of oil jars you can hurl at your enemy (or the floor) to set them ablaze with a light source, and arrows can be lit on fire with torches to instantly ignite anything they hit. Use your environment to your advantage, that's how this game is meant to be played. If you just want to hack 'n slash dudes, invest into strength and heavy swords so you can decapitate guards even without Adrenaline.
Actually I think my issue was elsewhere in Sun Tzu's writings:
-The Art of War IV:13
Try to pick apart spells. The basic fire spell has two runes, right? One of those means "fire". The other is "action" or something like that. Same with every other rune. Once you get the hang of how the system works overall, you'll be able to figure out spells not listed in the spellbook.
"Neat" is a colossal understatement, my point is.
This, try installing Windows on a flash drive or SD card.
I wish this game didn't have such damage-spongey enemies. I wish combat was more about parries, movement and exploiting your available skills on the enemies weakness, instead it comes down to measuring the enemies absurd and arbitrary seeming range of attack, looking for openings to kick and get quick wins, and of course, doling out ridiculous sums of damage instead of engaging in interesting fights. Very poorly balanced difficulty modes. Seems like all of the games Holla Forums likes are fundamentally flawed and promise more than they deliver.
I wonder how the console version is.
EYE is good, but in DMoMM you dont have to worry about broken legs. In fact, you break everyone with your legs
I want half-Holla Forums to leave, and take their shitty memes with them.
Maybe you are just a casual and these games aren't made for you. If you want something flawless then go play your AAA trash.
You're taught this in the tutorial - you powerattack them while they're on the ground. However, the impalement animation it causes only does a lot of damage - it's not always a guaranteed kill.
This game had 10/10 combat and the multiplayer was still active 2-3 years ago when I tried it.
The story was shit but whatever.
I seriously don't understand why they didn't make 1 or more sequels, it would have been a big hit.
It had a unique combat style that I've never seen in any other game and the multiplayer was quite swell (except when sometimes you'd get into a game and everyone was lvl 10 and would insta kill you with their insane 500 hour practiced accuracy).
Magic system in arx fatalis sucks.
It's impossible to cast spells in combat in arx fatalis.
The devs were also absolutely retarded in that they made spells very similar.
One firebolt attack spell is
–__
Another one (a telekinesis/healing something spell, not offence) is
–/_
So most spells are extremely similar in casting which is retarded.
They could have made an offence spell be a square, healing be a circle, another offence be a straight line.
Instead they made most spells be straight line followed by perpendicular or slightly curved line followed by straight line or curved line.
You're just shit at it.
There is no "firebolt" spell in the game. There is a Fireball. It is very different (pic 1) from what you've tried to scribble through pseudographics. Yok, the fire rune, the middle rune in the spell, looks closest to "u" if anything.
Telekinesis: Spacium, Communicatum (pic 2) looks nothing like what you've tried to describe.
Heal: Mega, Vitae (pic 3) looks nothing like what you've tried to describe.
The only thing this second scribble of yours looks remotely similar to is the Movis rune. It doesn't do shit on its own.
I never realized that this game's magic system is a perfect detector of casual shitters just because it requires players to use their brain if they want to play as mages.
4chan.org stay there newfag

Good luck casting aam taar when you have 3 orcs chasing you who insta kill you if they catch up to you while trying to run backwards through a series of mazes, stairs and corridors.
Especially for a shitty game that doesnt recognize your mouse movements and thinks taar is aam.
That's what I liked about Arx Fatalis and why I think it's a good mage simulator. Most games now just have you press your assigned button and then wait for 10 seconds unable to move while it charges, if an enemy hits you then it auto cancels.
In Fatalis it might take you around 10 seconds to draw out a big spell and you will have trouble moving because you are trying to concentrate on it. Spell failure isn't random chance but you messing up the rune and not being able to cast while you have 3 orcs on you is because it's pretty hard to draw a rune when you have 3 fucking orcs trying to run you through. It's hardly perfect but so few games actually attempt to do anything different with their magic that's it's a refreshing change. I've also always loved rune based magic systems that involve drawing so i'm probably biased.
Please stop.
Misqoting a post in a thread that was up for two days is a clear and definite sign of newfaggotry, oh yes.
But you never said that you don't like it. You flat out admitted that you are shit, and now even presented this stellar rebuttal, addressing my each and every point.
Not in the game. You are introduced to every race so don't even try going for "hurr durr goblins and orcs are the same".
And yes, casting a shitty fireball is not a problem if you just don't stand like a retard and wait for them to catch up. Also there's the issue of avoiding hits, but you've proven beyond any shadow of doubt that you've played the game for a short while, found it too hard and dropped.
Precision comes with practice, something you've never ran the risk of experiencing.
No, the problem is with the stupid game having runes that
Even outside of combat casting taar was a fucking pain since the retarded system made it so that unless you cast the second line in taar PERFECTLY perpendicularly it would count as soething else (I think it was aam but I cant remember).
–| this is taar, anything that is even 1 degree to the left or to the right e.g. –/ or –\__ is considered a different rune.
This forced me to do excessive, circus-style runes so taar I always cast it as

Do people really think two way transactions work this way?
The combat felt really clunky and unnatural. I'm surprised you guys like it.
Realism is a cancer
Just started playing AF again and I forgot how much it actually rewards you for being creative.
Yeah the magic system is neat. I just got my third rune which gives me "create" "Missle" and "fire" but my spellbook just has ignite and magic missle. I tried combining all three and "Create Fire Missle" ends up being a fire missle spell that isn't recorded. I'm looking forward to seeing what other kinds of shit you can do with these spells.
Is there a way to tell what the runes means though? I got those first three from looking online but is there a way to tell what the runes mean in game rather than looking them up?
I played this only once and it frustrated the fuck out of me. I felt then, and still do now, that there must have been something massive I was missing. I'm really quite skilled with gaming especially when it comes to first person games, and I always play everything on the hardest or second hardest mode possible. This, however, I played I believe on normal (can't remember) because old games tend to be far more difficult than newer ones, so I decided I'd increase it later. It may have been on hard but i don't recall, this was maybe three years ago.
Kicking was a massive crutch to me. Everything and anything easily killed you no matter what, and 1v1 fights were challenging enough, getting 3 enemies on me almost guaranteed my death. The difficult wasn't my only concern though, everyone has always hyped the fuck out of this game. I played the first couple hours and could not fucking understand why, it wasn't fun to me. Even with the kicking, I didn't kick because I wanted to, I HAD to do it. Melee combat was horribly clunky, I don't remember details but I remember that swinging and deflecting/blocking was a nightmare for some reason. Orcs could utterly destroy me even though I went mostly a warrior build, from what I recall.
I just could not stand the feel of the game and I still don't get why Holla Forums seems to have a nostalgic hardon for it. I DID finish the game, even after forcing myself to come back to it several times over the span of a week, but it wasn't worth it. Although Xana helped.
Perhaps we need to write some kind of guide how to play the game properly, or at least show more WEBMs of cool tricks. I have replayed DM so often that I can play on Hardcore blind. It's like people going in Deus Ex for their first time trying to play it as a shooter.
link?
No you're not. I've played through Dark Messiah of Might and Magic on every build and unless you play on the very hardest difficulty the game is completely fair in every way. Anything from a knife wielding fighter with magic to a specialized build will do well. No cheesing either. Shit if you play properly you can do 90% of the game with backstab/environment kills.
You just suck dick.
Wish I would have known about how psn works in this game.
I'm so used to poison killing me that I never thought to just let it almost kill you like they wanted you to do in this.
say what you want but an autist who plays through dark souls or demon souls 100 times can easily say "it's really not that hard."
So you're saying "you can even go through the game doing the easiest thing available to you." The kicks, spike racks, and ropes to cut are specifically there for the most efficient removal of enemies, as are all the retards who just so happen to be admiring a view from the edge of a cliff.
you're right user, i'll go back and play it a thousand more times so it'll be cake, maybe then i'll be able to truly appreciate it like the connoisseur i ought to be. it wasn't fun and it still won't be if i mastered it.
The hardest difficulty level is literally bullshit. If you're playing on it, that's your problem. Other than that, most of the damage you do should be through the environment. The only thing shields are good for is blocking ranged attacks. always carry a fire weapon on you, spiders can suck my dick. The game is about abusing its goofy physics system. If you knock something off its feet you can kill it with a simple stab attack. From what I've noticed, if you're using the basic spammy weapon attacks, it will take forever to kill an enemy, but if you use the charged attacks and throw/kick stuff at it and use the environment you can chop down enemies like you're the Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.
Nice double-reply fag.
I've only played it once and can say with certainty that you just suck dick. Stop trying to play it like Skyrim and start playing it like "Nigger gets caught trying to summon demons with his dick out". Dark Messiah is first and foremost an improvised murder simulator, secondly an elaborate murder simulator, and very lastly a fantasy RPG hack n slash. If you go into it expecting dark souls or m1 spam then you are gonna have a bad time.
The sodium levels are getting unhealthy.
You don't fucking say?
As someone who played through Dark souls a couple of times and usually takes a while to get used to non-casual games before being able to play them properly, it's really not that hard. Even if you don't use the enviroment for insta-kills it's still not that hard. I played through as a warrior on my first playthrough and killed most enemies with my own weapons with a few kicks into hazards now and then.
You don't just stand there and take on multiple enemies because they will somehow magically win fights where they outnumber you 3 to 1, it's some kind of ancient necromancer magic that counters demons. Instead you will focus on heavy attacks and "hit and run" so that you don't just get surrounded. A shield to block arrows and other attacks helps a lot since they will still get attacks in but try and use the enviroment to force them to come at you one at a time or from a certain direction. The physics system is for more than kicking them into spikes, you can pick up most any small object such as a rock, crate or barrel and throw it at them. This can actually kill them if it hits their head but even if it doesn't they will still be knocked over so you can either execute them with a heavy attack or rush the other ones while they are down. This is to say nothing about actual enviromental hazards or the use of fire.
The game really isn't that hard. Maybe you should drop the pride and assumption that you will of course be good at every game you play and accept that you apparently sucked at it when you first tried.
It is a fireball spell. Initially it is very small to communicate how weak Am Shagar's magical ability is.
It is also listed. Click on the third bookmark from the top on the left part of spellbook.
Empirically.
If you don't mind a minor spoiler: if you had a frost rune how would you go about trying to cast an offensive frost-based spell?
I have to try and install this on my old PC. It won't work on mine - instantly quits at the first loading cinematic, either repack or legit copy
you can fix that by removing the intro .bik file in the game folder, causing the game to outright skip the bugged intro
I just reinstalled and tried. It still crashes just after that cinematic was supposed to occur.
The 'engine error' dialog says could not get client.dll interface from library client.
Googled that, forum post said to turn off comparability mode, and now it's running.
thanks a million
